Drum Major Instructor
While an undergraduate student at ECU, Chess was a member of the Marching Pirates for five years, serving several years as Head Drum Major. He has 17 years of experience teaching drum majors at the high school, university, and drum corps level... and has been involved with the marching band activity for a total of 21 years. He is currently on staff as the Drum Major Instructor of the ECU Marching Pirates and also the North Lincoln High School “Band of Knights” in Lincolnton, NC and the East Lincoln High School "Mustang Band" in Denver, NC. He is also an active clinician and adjudicator for several programs and competitions across the state. Chess has also served as the band's webmaster.
Chess has been on staff at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC since 2004. He is currently the Director of Campus Services, overseeing the departments of Information Technology, Facilities Management, Printing & Mailing Services, and the Bookstore. Chess is a doctoral candidate in higher education administration at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He also received a Master of Science in Instructional Technology degree, a Graduate Certificate in Performance Improvement, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a concentration in Management Information Systems, and a Certificate in Business and Technical Communication from East Carolina University.
